• recognize that patients with preoperative anemia generally have a higher risk profile (ie, more comorbidities) than those who do not have preoperative anemia
• become aware that the presence of preoperative anemia is a risk factor for poor surgical outcomes
• understand that it is currently unclear whether measures to intervene to correct preoperative anemia will influence morbidity complications associated with preoperative anemia
