Activity Description and Educational Objectives

Oncology nurses play an integral role in managing patients with pancreatic cancer and helping them to navigate their individual journey with this disease. The treatment landscape for pancreatic cancer is evolving with newer treatment options for second-line therapy which may impact earlier treatment decisions. Nurses caring for patients with pancreatic cancer must be aware of this shifting treatment landscape and the implications for their patients. In this activity based on a recent PeerView Live symposium, a panel of expert oncology nurses discusses current treatment options for pancreatic cancer including ongoing clinical trials, provide guidance for managing treatment-related toxicities, and offer strategies to improve patient communication. Patient insights are woven throughout the presentations.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Counsel patients with advanced pancreatic cancer on safe and effective application of established and recently approved chemotherapeutic approaches based on an understanding of benefits and risks of available options and of disease- and treatment-related complications
  • Communicate with patients regarding enrollment in ongoing clinical trials investigating the new cytotoxic platforms and combination regimens for patients with pancreatic cancer in a range of disease settings
  • Provide appropriate disease- and treatment-related education and guidance to patients with pancreatic cancer to enable them to meaningfully participate in planning and decisions related to their care
