Activity Description and Educational Objectives

In this activity, an infectious diseases expert discusses strategies to assess HIV risk behaviors in patients and identify appropriate candidates for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). He also shares effective communication techniques to motivate and increase adherence to HIV prevention strategies, as well as methods to implement PrEP education and counseling.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Apply strategies (ie, effective sexual history-taking; sexual minority competence) to assess HIV risk behaviors and identify specific patients who are appropriate candidates for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)
  • Implement effective PrEP education and counseling to address misconceptions and stigma
  • Apply evidence-based and consensus guidelines regarding the appropriate use of PrEP in people at high risk for HIV acquisition
  • Employ successful patient communication techniques that motivate and increase adherence to HIV prevention strategies

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of primary care physicians, specialist physicians, nurse practitioners, physician’s assistants, registered nurses, and other clinicians involved in managing patients who may be at risk of contracting HIV.

Nursing Education Purpose Statement

The purpose of this activity is to improve knowledge and competence of nurses concerning the management of patients who may be at risk of contracting HIV.

Requirements for Successful Completion

In order to receive credit, participants must view the activity and complete the post-test and evaluation form. A score of 70% or higher is needed to obtain CME/CE credit. There are no pre-requisites and there is no fee to participate in this activity or to receive CME/CE credit. Statements of Credit are awarded upon successful completion of the post-test and evaluation form.
