Activity Description

Cancer Summaries and Commentaries: Update from Chicago – Skin Cancer and Other Cutaneous Malignancies is an online activity consisting of 11 short summaries of key clinical data presented recently at international oncology meetings, accompanied by expert commentary providing insight into how these data fit into current paradigms and how to apply these findings to clinical practice to improve patient care.

Statement of Educational Need

The recent expansion of treatment options for patients with skin cancer and other cutaneous malignancies represents important progress, but it has also created practice and education gaps for community medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and surgical oncologists. In particular, community practitioners face the continuous challenge of staying abreast of issues relevant to clinical practice, such as the appropriate use of recently approved agents and companion diagnostic tests, findings from key clinical trials, updates made to treatment guidelines and recommendations, and clinical trial availability. In addition, a number of current controversies regarding the local control of melanoma and basal cell carcinoma add to the complexity of disease management for these patients.

Goals (Purpose) of Program

This activity is designed to update physicians on the data that have been recently presented at major cancer conferences so that they can assess and prepare to apply these findings to their clinical practice to improve patient care.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better prepared to:

  • Review and evaluate data on newly approved targeted agents and treatment approaches in current development
  • Identify appropriate clinical trials examining novel targeted agents that are designed to benefit patients with skin cancer and other cutaneous malignancies
  • Apply evidence, guidelines, and individual patient characteristics in selecting treatment strategies for patients with advanced melanoma

Target Audience

This educational activity is directed toward medical oncologists and fellows who treat patients with skin and other cutaneous malignancies. Surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, dermatopathologists and pathologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, researchers, and other healthcare professionals interested in the treatment of skin and other cutaneous malignancies are also invited to participate.

Requirements for Successful Completion

In order to receive a CME certificate, participants must view the Cancer Summaries and Commentaries: Update from Chicago – Skin Cancer and Other Cutaneous Malignancies, complete the posttest with a passing score of 70% or higher, and complete the evaluation and request for credit. Participants may immediately download a CME certificate upon completion of these steps.
