After reading this article, the learner should be able to:
- recognize that patients undergoing a Norwood procedure who remain in the hospital until having the second stage of palliation with a cavopulmonary anastomosis (bidirectional Glenn anastomosis) have significantly higher rates of chromosomal abnormalities, necrotizing enterocolitis and the need for ECMO compared with patients who have their second stage during a separate hospitalization.
- classify that patients undergoing a Norwood procedure who remain in the hospital until having the second stage of palliation with a cavopulmonary anastomosis (bidirectional Glenn anastomosis) have mortality rates no different from with patients who have their second stage during a separate hospitalization.
- explain that patients who have a modified Blalock-Taussig shunt with the Norwood are significantly more likely to remain in the hospital until the second stage compared with those who have a right ventricular to pulmonary artery shunt (Sano modification).
- discuss that in this study, the proportion of patients undergoing a Norwood procedure remaining in the hospital until the second stage is higher in more recent eras.
