Program Description & Educational Objectives

The use of opioids for the treatment of chronic pain continues to be controversial, largely due to the abuse potential of opioids. A recent meta-analysis found that substance use disorders are common in patients taking opioids for back pain, with aberrant medication-taking behaviors occurring in up to 24% of cases. This activity explains how, through proper risk assessment, individualized selection of the appropriate opioid, and diligent monitoring of patients on opioid therapy, patients can more safely receive the pain management regimen required to control their chronic pain.

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Assess patients for risk of opioid misuse using current consensus guidelines and simple methods of risk stratification
  • Select the most appropriate opioid for individualized chronic pain management based on risk stratification
  • Routinely monitor patients on opioid therapy and take appropriate action
  • Incorporate pain management quality measures into clinical practice in order to improve patient outcomes

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of US-based pain specialists, primary care physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and pharmacists who treat patients with chronic pain.
