Course Description

This course presents information about the pathophysiology of diabetes, the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and methods to evaluate and treat type 2 diabetes and related comorbidities. This course also provides tips you can share to help patients and families set nutrition and physical activity goals to manage type 2 diabetes.

The goal of this course is to increase your comfort in assessing and managing a child with type 2 diabetes to help reduce the risk of complications.

After completing this course, you will be able to:
- Differentiate between type 1 and type 2 diabetes using the findings from clinical history, physical examination, and laboratory testing.
- Identify the risk factors and comorbidities associated with type 2 diabetes.
- Identify the screening tests used to diagnose diabetes.
- Outline an education, treatment, and follow-up plan for children with type 2 diabetes.
- Evaluate the use of metformin, including dose titration, dose adjustments, and possible side effects.
- Outline therapeutic goals for glucose, lipids, and blood pressure in patients with type 2 diabetes.
