Course Description

After reading this article, the learner should be able to:
• recognize that all data-gathering tools are not equal; learn the type of database that was used in this study; understand the limitations of the database; and differentiate it from other databases that are used
• recognize and learn the differential increases in birth rates for GUCH parturients and non-GUCH parturients during the course of this study
• learn the common congenital heart diagnoses that were associated with GUCH parturients during the course of this study
• recognize that this study was able to document and quantify an increase in maternal mortality in GUCH parturients because of the size of the patient sample that was studied
• recognize that in addition to maternal mortality, GUCH parturients also had a higher complication rate in this manuscript
• critically consider the limitations of the study, especially with regard to repaired and unrepaired congenital heart disease
• note the various conclusions that the authors made and speculate how the health care system can improve the care of GUCH patients
