Program Description & Educational Objectives

In this activity, a concise overview of recent efficacy and safety data with respect to the treatment of macular edema secondary to branch and central retinal vein occlusion is provided. Topics discussed include laser grid photocoagulation therapy, intravitreal corticosteroids, and intravitreal antivascular endothelial growth factor therapies. In addition, Dr. Jeffrey Heier comments on the challenges many clinicians face with respect to treatment selection in patients with these conditions due to a lack of head-to-head clinical trials. He also discusses some potential strategies to aid practitioners in selecting an appropriate therapy for patients with macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion.

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Apply recent efficacy and safety data related to intravitreal therapies for the treatment of macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion
  • Develop algorithms for the selection of treatment for individual patients with macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion
