Program Description & Educational Objectives

In this Performance Improvement (PI)–enhanced, case-based CME/CNE/CPE activity, an expert on the recognition and management of TLS in the cancer setting uses several patient scenarios to illustrate how professionals as part of the greater oncology management team should incorporate TLS prophylaxis and management strategies into their cancer management protocols. During these cases, the faculty discusses the importance of risk assessment and stratification, as well as the guidelines that support a risk-based approach to patient monitoring, prophylaxis, and management. In addition, an informative discussion on PI is offered, as well as several easy-to-use tools that may be applied to the development of PI interventions aimed at integrating TLS management into daily practice. Collectively, the educational and PI components of this activity will allow you to evaluate the performance in your own practice; develop and implement a plan for improving performance in the area of TLS risk assessment, prophylaxis and management; and then re-evaluate your practice's performance on the selected quality measure.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Accurately determine tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) risk in a cancer patient presenting with a hematologic malignancy or solid tumor
• Administer effective TLS prophylaxis to a cancer patient according to previously established risk status
• Recognize and manage emergent hyperuricemia in a patient with cancer who is receiving chemotherapy and TLS prophylaxis

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of medical oncologists, hematologist-oncologists, oncology nurses, oncology/hospital pharmacists, and other clinicians involved in the management of cancer patients who may be at risk for TLS.

Requirements for Successful Completion

In order to receive credit, participants must view the activity and complete the post-test and evaluation form. There are no pre-requisites and there is no fee to participate in this activity or to receive CME/CNE/CPE credit. Statements of Credit are awarded upon successful completion of the post-test and evaluation form.
