Target Audience

This activity is intended for primary care physicians and other health care providers who treat patients with MHG.

There are no prerequisites for this educational activity.

Activity Description

Guided by comprehensive assessment of clinical knowledge gaps and needs, this educational activity is intended to improve the assessment, recognition, treatment, and ongoing management of patients with MHG.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be better prepared to:

  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of MHG, and its impact on patients’ overall health and quality of life
  • Identify challenges in the differential diagnosis of MHG and outline current evidence for how these may be overcome to improve recognition in clinical practice
  • Assess the risks and benefits associated with current and emerging testosterone replacement therapies with a focus on how these may affect patient preferences and adherence to treatment
  • Evaluate the clinical profile of emerging testosterone replacement therapies and discuss their role in the treatment and management of MHG

Statement of Need and Learner’s Gap

MHG is an endocrine pathology characterized by testosterone deficiency. The cause can be either testicular (primary MHG), pituitary-hypothalamic (secondary MHG), or geriatric.1 A 2007 survey of 1,475 men aged 30 to 79 years reported a prevalence of 5.6% for symptomatic androgen deficiency and a projected increase of 17% in MHG risk with every 10-year increase in age.2 A year earlier, the Hypogonadism In Males (HIM) study demonstrated an MHG prevalence of about 40% in American men 45 years or older.3 As the US population ages, MHG prevalence is expected to reach 6.5 million by 2025.2

Despite the significant burden of MHG on patients and their families, this condition continues to be underreported and undertreated. Primary care physicians in particular face a broad array of diagnostic and therapeutic challenges for which cutting-edge insights into evidence-based best practices are needed—and are key to improved patient outcomes. This educational program and interactive forum are designed to enhance clinician understanding of this complex disorder using expert insights into differential diagnosis, clinical profile, and current therapeutic options.
