Activity Description and Educational Objectives

In this activity, an expert in pain management discusses practical considerations for the identification and diagnosis of chronic pain, as well the appropriate use of opioid analgesics with a focus on the role of abuse deterrent opioid formulations as part of a comprehensive approach to its management.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Apply strategies to diagnose chronic pain and determine its severity
  • Employ comprehensive approaches to treat chronic pain that requires daily, around-the-clock, long-term opioid therapy and is inadequately controlled with alternative medications
  • Identify patients with chronic pain who are at high risk for opioid abuse
  • Discuss opioid abuse-deterrent technologies and their application in patients with chronic pain

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of primary care physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with chronic pain.

Nursing Education Purpose Statement

The purpose of this activity is to improve knowledge and competence of nurses concerning the treatment of chronic pain.

Requirements for Successful Completion

In order to receive credit, participants must view the activity and complete the post-test and evaluation form. A score of 70% or higher is needed to obtain CME/CE/CPE credit. There are no pre-requisites and there is no fee to participate in this activity or to receive CME/CE/CPE credit. Statements of Credit are awarded upon successful completion of the post-test and evaluation form.
