Learning outcomes:
1) Estimate the proportion of patients who undergo planned non-cardiac surgery for whom serious postoperative complications may occur;
2) Recognise factors that increase a person’s risk of developing preventable complications in the postoperative period;
3) Recognise which preoperative investigations can establish which patients will benefit from enhanced postoperative care;
4) Appraise the evidence underpinning proposed interventions to prevent postoperative complications
