Program Overview

Despite many available pharmaceuticals, chronic pain remains a poorly controlled condition. The major barriers include insufficient recognition and evaluation of pain, lack of understanding of its complicated pathophysiology, and lack of familiarity with mechanism-based neuromodulatory treatments. This is further exacerbated by the lack of appropriate training specifically designed for pain management among many clinicians. Accordingly, this activity will discuss practical strategies for pain severity evaluation and current understanding of pain pathophysiology. Furthermore, this activity will highlight potential neuromodulatory targets for treatment as they relate to the underlying neurobiological pathways, particularly during the transition from acute to chronic pain. Recent clinical trial data demonstrating the effectiveness of neuromodulatory analgesics in managing chronic pain will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Utilize appropriate pain assessment tools as an integral component of adequate chronic pain diagnosis and management
  • Describe the underlying neurobiology of chronic pain as it relates to mechanism-specific selection of neuromodulatory analgesics
  • Identify patients with chronic pain who would benefit from neuromodulatory analgesics based on efficacy and safety data from clinical trials

Target Audience

This activity is designed for internal medicine clinicians and other healthcare professionals interested in the management of chronic pain.
