Course Description

After completing this CME module, participants will be able to

1. Explain the pathogenesis and risk factors for osteonecrosis of the hip.
2. Describe the Ficat classification for osteonecrosis of the hip, characterizing femoral head changes in mild, moderate, and advanced disease.
3. Identify imaging studies and associated findings useful in the diagnosis of osteonecrosis of the hip.
4. Discuss management options for osteonecrosis of the hip, including both nonsurgical and surgical methods.
5. Discuss the indications, contraindications, advantages and disadvantages, considerations, and outcomes of the various surgical treatment options used for osteonecrosis of the hip, including core decompression, proximal femoral osteotomy, nonvascularized and vascularized bone grafting, and arthroplasty procedures.
