Course Description

After reading this article, the learner should be able to:
- recognize that criteria for performing an interim shunt, rather than a one stage repair in patients with PA/VSD/MAPCAs, include failure of an intraoperative flow study or preoperative factors suggesting that the pulmonary artery bed is inadequate for complete biventricular repair.
- identify that genetic abnormalities in this group of patients with PA/VSD/MAPCAs who need a preparatory shunt occur in over 50% in this series.
- recognize that the majority of patients after initial unifocalization and shunting will still require more work on the pulmonary arteries, either during an interim procedure or at the time of complete biventricular repair.
- identify that using this strategy in this series, two thirds of the patients will achieve complete repair by 3 years and roughly ¾ will survive to 5 years.
