Course Description

After completing this CME module, participants will be able to

1. Summarize ACCP, AAOS, and SCIP guidelines on thromboprophylaxis in orthopaedic surgery.
2. Describe clinical implications of neuraxial anesthesia in patients receiving anticoagulant medications.
3. Explain the physiology of blood coagulation.
4. Discuss ASRA guidelines on the use of regional anesthesia in patients receiving anticoagulant medications, including the use of unfractionated and low-molecular-weight heparins; warfarin; antiplatelet medications such as NSAIDs, clopidogrel, and ticlopidine; herbal medications; and new anticoagulants such as fondaparinux.
