Activity Description and Educational Objectives

In this activity, a pediatric neurology expert discusses recent advances in spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Strategies for the diagnosis and symptomatic treatment of SMA across the clinical spectrum are discussed, and insights are provided on the genetic basis of the disease and on newly approved and emerging therapies that are changing the face of this disease.

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
  • Employ effective strategies to readily identify, diagnose, and classify patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) across the clinical spectrum of this disease
  • Identify the benefits and clinical shortcomings of symptomatic and supportive care for individuals with SMA
  • Assess key data on the mechanisms of action, efficacy, safety, and tolerability of newly approved and emerging treatment approaches in patients with SMA
  • Recognize the potential impact of recently approved and emerging therapies on the care of patients with SMA

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of neurologists, pediatric neurologists, and other clinicians involved in the care of patients with spinal muscular atrophy.

Requirements for Successful Completion

In order to receive credit, participants must view the activity and complete the post-test and evaluation form. A score of 70% or higher is needed to obtain CME credit. There are no pre-requisites and there is no fee to participate in this activity or to receive CME credit. Statements of Credit are awarded upon successful completion of the post-test and evaluation form.
