Course Description

After completing this module you should:
•Understand what spirometry involves and how it is important in diagnosing and managing respiratory disorders
•Be able to show patients how to perform spirometry and to ensure the results are accurate
•Be able to interpret spirometry results and differentiate between a restrictive and obstructive pattern
•Know the common causes for both restrictive and obstructive patterns
•Be able to use spirometry to classify the severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) using criteria from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD)
•Know when to refer your patient to secondary care
•Be able to identify poor patient technique.
