Course Description

After reading this article, the learner should be able to:
- recognize that overall mortality for neonates with symptomatic tetralogy is similar, whether treated with early complete repair or with a shunt followed by eventual complete repair.
- identify that the length of ICU care is vastly increased in patients undergoing neonatal complete repair when compared with those shunted, particularly with regards to the length of intubation.
- recognize that the odds of having a significant cardiac event during the initial hospitalization was far greater in the repaired patients compared with the shunted patients, especially with respect to arrhythmias.
- identify that the overall mortality and post procedure cardiac events between the two strategies are similar when one takes into account the eventual repair hospitalization for the shunted group.
