After reading this article, the learner should be able to:
- identify the benefits associated with concomitant surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation during cardiac surgery.
- choose patients who are most suitable for undergoing SA for AF.
- outline therapeutic strategies for optimal management of patients with AF undergoing cardiac surgery.
- formulate a management plan that minimizes the risk of perioperative complications of SA for AF (e.g. renal failure and pacemaker insertion).
- support decision-making for SA of AF with objective demonstration of improved outcome and reduced complications.
